Why is it important to adjust my APRS settings for optimum performance?

Many people use APRS as a plug-N-play mode, but this can result in a 10 to 40 dB performance loss on weaker signals. Adjusting settings such as level, deviation, preemphasis, tone skew, deemphasis, balance, and impedance can significantly improve signal quality and visibility.
